About this artwork

In 1876, Hugh Bolton Jones joined the American artists' colony on the north coast of France at Pont-Aven, Brittany. There Jones and the other artists often painted outdoors, attempting to capture the light on the landscape. The Bretons welcomed the artists into their community and frequently posed as models.
