Art Historical Context

Anders Zorn's *Carl Fredrik Liljevalch*, created in 1909, is a masterful etching capturing the likeness of Swedish industrialist and art patron Carl Fredrik Liljech Jr. This intimate portrait exemplifies Zorn's prowess as one of the foremost printmakers of his era, blending realism with a luminous sensitivity to light and texture. the time, Zorn was at the height of his international fame, having transitioned from painting and watercolor to etching, a medium that allowed him to explore intricate details and tonal subtleties on a smaller scale. As the fourth state of five, this impression reveals the etching's progressive refinement—Zorn meticulously reworked his copper plate, burnishing and deepening lines to achieve greater depth and character. Etching, involving acid-biting into metal for inked impressions, was ideal for Zorn's spontaneous yet precise style, rooted in late 19th-century Realism and Impressionism. The plate measures 7 13/16 × 5 7/8 inches, with a larger sheet underscoring its status as a collector's print. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Drawings and Prints department (gift of David Keppel, 1917), this work highlights early 20th-century Swedish cultural exchange and Zorn's enduring legacy in portraiture, immortalizing Liljevalch's dignified presence for generations of visitors.
