This decorative charger is an exceptional example of the Japanese taste in 19th-century French decorative arts. Influenced by cloisonné exported by Japan when the country opened it borders to the West in the 1850s, this charger features parrots in lush foliage before a blue background that imitates cloisonné. Georges Hugnet (1906–1974) was a multifaceted French artist, poet, writer, and critic whose innovative collages and graphic works bridged Dada and Surrealism.
