Charles Boynton Darling established a dry goods firm in Boston in 1827. His career led him to his future wife, Elizabeth Ellis, whose father was prominent in Boston’s business and political circles. To support his family, Darling worked for various firms before opening his own company in 1865, Charles B. Darling and Son.
