Hans Canon’s *Die Marter des heiligen Hippolytus* (after 1875) is a compact oil sketch that served as the preparatory design for the high altarpiece in the parish church of Sankt Hippolyt in Harmannsdorf, Lower Austria. At just 45 × 36 cm, the canvas allowed the artist to work out the dramatic composition and lighting before scaling the scene to monumental size.
