This intimate oil-on-canvas portrait by Baron Antoine Jean Gros captures François Gérard around 1790, when both young artists were establishing themselves amid the turbulent years of the French Revolution. At just twenty years old, Gérard would later rise to prominence as a leading Neoclassical painter and, like Gros, receive the title of baron under Napoleon.
