Art Historical Context

Hendrick Goltzius’s *Geboorte van Adonis* (Birth of Adonis), created in 1605, captures a dramatic moment from classical mythology. The drawing depicts the infant Adonis emerging from the myrrh tree into which his mother Myrrha had been transformed, a story drawn from Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. By this date Goltzius had already established himself as one of the leading Northern Mannerist artists, celebrated for both his virtuoso engravings and his later paintings; this large sheet reflects his continued interest in refined draftsmanship even after he turned to oil painting around 1600. Executed in brown ink with white highlights on gray prepared paper, the work demonstrates Goltzius’s mastery of the chiaroscuro technique. The prepared ground allows luminous white accents to suggest flesh, drapery, and divine light against deep shadows, creating a sculptural sense of volume within a purely graphic medium. Measuring 456 × 606 mm, the drawing’s scale and tonal sophistication make it a prime example of early-seventeenth-century Dutch interest in mythological narrative and technical innovation. Today the sheet stands as an eloquent witness to Goltzius’s late career, bridging the graphic traditions of the sixteenth century with the emerging painterly concerns of the Dutch Golden Age.
