In 1867, at the height of Ulysses S. Grantâs popularity, portraitist William Cogswell made a painting of the entire family. It soon proved a favorite for such print- makers as John Sartain, who reproduced it in the form of this engraving. Although Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant (1826â1902) were gaining social recognition in the nationâs capital, their four children were considerably less known.
