About this artwork
John B. Pendleton (1798-1866) was one of Americaâs earliest lithographers, establishing his printing house in Boston in 1825. Lithography was then the most modern form of reproducing a drawing. One of Pendletonâs apprentices was Nathaniel Currier, who would eventually buy his mentorâs firm and, with his new partner, rename it Currier & Ives. Rembrandt Peale also painted a full-length portrait of Pendleton, now owned by the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
