Reticella wordt in de meeste literatuur ingedeeld bij de hoofdgroep naaldkant. Van oorsprong is reticella echter kantborduurwerk, waarbij als steunweefsel bijvoorbeeld linnen werd gebruikt. Later werd een techniek ontwikkeld waarbij spandraden het steunweefsel vervingen. Het visuele effect was hetzelfde en deze naaldkant noemde men toen ook gewoon reticella.
