Gerard Bilders painted *Koeien bij een plas* (Cows by a Pond) during the early 1860s, a period when Dutch artists were turning toward intimate, atmospheric landscapes. As a leading figure of the emerging Hague School, Bilders favored quiet rural scenes that captured the subtle moods of the Dutch countryside rather than dramatic narratives.
