De twee oude mannen spelen het spel gô, de andere zeven staan om hun heen. De negen oude mannen waren vrienden van de dichter Pai Chü-i (772-846), in Japan bekend als Hakurakuten en een ambitieuze man die zoveel vijanden kreeg, dat hij uiteindelijk verbannen werd naar de provincies. Yashima Gakutei (c. 1786–1868), born in Osaka as the illegitimate son of a Tokugawa shogunate samurai named Hirata, adopted the name from his mother's subsequent marriage into the Yashima clan.
