Martino Altomonte’s “Kruzifixus mit Maria Magdalena” (1728) captures a poignant moment of Christian devotion: Christ on the cross accompanied by the penitent Mary Magdalene. An Italian-born artist who spent most of his career in Austria, Altomonte was a leading figure of the late Baroque period in Central Europe. His religious works often graced churches and aristocratic collections across the Habsburg lands, blending Italian dramatic lighting with the expressive emotionalism favored north of the Alps.
