This album of eight leaves Shitao (Zhuuoji, 2–1707), around the 1690, offers intimate views Chinese landscapes infused with a of quiet exploration. former Ming prince turned Buddhist monk and painter Shitao belonged to Individualist movement of early Qing dynasty. He rigid academic traditions in of spontaneous brushwork and expression, often drawing on Daoist ideas ofclusion and the search for spiritual enlightenment—reflected here in the title “Seeking Immortals.” Painted in ink and light color on paper, the small album format (roughly 21 by 31.4 cm per leaf) was designed for leisurely viewing in a scholar’s studio. Shitao’s fluid lines and subtle washes capture misty mountains, winding rivers, and boats gliding through the scenery, inviting viewers to imagine journeys both physical and philosophical. The inclusion of boats underscores themes of passage and discovery common in literati art. Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum through the bequest of John M.
