About this artwork

An unknown artist painted this image of an Italian port in the eighteenth century. Many American artists traveled to Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to learn from the old-master paintings in the museums of Paris, London, and Rome. British and American clients bought images of distant landscapes and figures, and even artists who couldn’t afford to make the trip would copy the engravings and paintings of those who did.

Georges Hugnet (1906–1974) was a multifaceted French artist, poet, writer, and critic whose innovative collages and graphic works bridged Dada and Surrealism. Born in Paris on July 11, 1906, he spent much of his early childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, returning to France around 1913.
