About this artwork
Art Historical Context
Created in 1868 by Makart, *Moderne Amoretten Entwurf zur Dekoration einer* is an oil work on reproductions mounted on, measuring 80 by 149. Now part of the Belvedere Collection in Vienna, the title translates as “Modern Cupids – Design for Walloration.” It presents lively, contemporary interpretations of classical cupid figures arranged as a proposal for adorning an interior wall. This piece marks the first time Makart turned to photography to visualize his ideas more quickly and easily. He applied thin, translucent oil glazes over three photographic reproductions of his *Modern Cupids*, while painting the two circular tondi directly onto the canvas. The combination of media allowed him to test compositions and decorative effects with greater speed and flexibility. As a preparatory design, the work reveals Makart’s inventive process for large-scale wall decoration, blending traditional oil techniques with the new tool of photography. The delicate overpainting and balanced grouping of figures create a sense of playful elegance, inviting viewers to imagine how these modern amorous motifs would have transformed a room.
