About this artwork
This outer coffin belonged to Senebtisi, a high-status woman titled "Lady of the House" during Egypt's Middle Kingdom. The coffin dates to approximately 1850-1775 B.C., during Dynasty 12, and was discovered in the Memphite Region at Lisht North during the Metropolitan Museum's 1907-08 excavations. Measuring 194 centimeters in length, it forms the outermost layer of a nested set of three coffins that protected Senebtisi's mummified remains.
