About this artwork
Charles T. Webber worked in a Cincinnati portrait gallery where clients had the option of having their portrait painted from a photograph or from a sitting with the artist. Photographs from this period generally show the sitters posing with solemn self-consciousness for the slow-moving camera equipment. In contrast, the animation, charm and pleasant disposition that this portrait conveys suggest that Webber painted the boy from life.
