Marcellin Desboutin (1823-1902), working in collaboration with or after Giuseppe De Nittis and Edgar Degas himself, created this intimate drypoint portrait around 1875, later cancelled with deliberate defacing marks. The small plate (3⅜ by 2 11/16 inches) printed on a large sheet (12⅝ by 9¾ inches) captures Degas in profile, demonstrating the close artistic relationships among Impressionist circle printmakers.
