About this artwork
In this composition the winged figure of Glory descends from a starry sky. She holds a palm leaf, often associated with martyrdom and greatness, in one hand, and small flowers flow out of the other. In other versions of this print Fantin pays homage to Richard Wagner by including the composer's name on a gravestone below Glory's feet. Such an image suggests the composer's immortality achieved through his masterful, enduring compositions.

Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour was born on January 14, 1836, in Grenoble, France, to portrait painter Théodore Fantin-Latour, who gave him his earliest drawing lessons. The family relocated to Paris in 1841, where in 1850, at age 14, he enrolled in the École de Dessin, studying under Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, whose innovative memory-based method of drawing from observation profoundly ...
