**Self-Portrait by Robert Frederick Blum (1880)** Created when Robert Frederick Blum was just 23 years old, *Self-Portrait* captures the young American artist at the cusp of his promising career. Born in Cincinnati in 1857, Blum trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago later in New York, where he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene of the Gilded Age. By 1880, he was recognition for his skillful draftsmanship and sensitivity to light and color, influences that would define his later works inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e prints and Venetian scenes during his travels abroad.
