Op deze wat eigenaardige voorstelling ligt een stalknecht te slapen op de grond in een paardestal met een hooivork en een roskam in zijn handen. Achter hem staat een paard, van achteren gezien, dat het hoofd omwend naar de beschouwer. Rechts staat een heks, zij leunt over een muurtje en zwaait met een brandende toorts. Op de muur hangt een schild met een eenhoorn.

Art Historical Context

In the whimsical yet eerie drawing *Slapende stalkne met heks en paard (Sleeping Stable Boy with and Horse), created by Renaissance master Hans Baldung Grien 1532 and 1536, a stable boy slumbers obliviously on the stable floor clutching a pitchfork and comb. A horse peers curiously at us from behind, while to the right, a witch leans menacingly over a wall, brandishing a flaming torch. A unicorn shield adorns the wall, adding a layer of mythical intrigue to this compact work on paper (339 × 200 mm). Hans Baldung Grien

Hans Baldung, known by the nickname Grien, was born around 1484 or 1485 in Schwäbisch Gmünd, in the Swabia region of what is now Germany. He came from a distinguished academic family — his father Johann Baldung was a university-educated jurist who served as legal adviser to the bishop of Strasbourg — making Hans a notable exception as the first male in his family not to attend university, and one ...
