About this artwork

Fragonard traveled a great deal during his career, and always took the opportunity to copy images from the paintings and sculptures he saw. This etching shows the influence of the Baroque artist Johann Lys. The fine network of lines used by Fragonard, however, reflects his own exquisite drawing style rather than the blustery brush­strokes found in oil paintings such as Lys' s.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) was a French painter and printmaker whose late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. Born in Grasse, he moved to Paris where he trained under Jean-Baptiste Chardin and François Boucher, winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1752.
