Pellegrino Tibaldi created this delicate drawing of a Standing Prophet or Apostle around 1545–50, during the height of the Mannerist period in Italy. As a young artist active in Bologna and Rome, Tibaldi often produced such studies as preparation for larger frescoes or altarpieces destined for churches. The elongated figure and poised stance reflect the graceful, expressive ideals of Mannerism, which favored elegant forms over strict classical balance.
