Art Historical Context

This print, known simply as a "Title Page," is associated the French artist René Charier (1680–3). Though Charpentier’s own career ended decades earlier, the work is dated 1772–77, to a later publication or edition that drew on his designs. As a print, it belongs to a medium that flourished in 18th-century Europe for sharing images far beyond original drawings or sculptures. Title pages of this kind were typically ornamental gateways to books or print suites, blending lettering with decorative motifs to set the tone for what followed. They showcase the skill of engravers who translated artistic ideas into reproducible form, making them valuable both as functional objects and as collectible works of graphic art. Now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the piece was acquired through the Advisory Council. While research into its exact techniques and original context continues, it invites viewers to consider how French visual traditions traveled across time and into American collections.
