About this artwork

Because of firing difficulties, early Meissen red stoneware is often inconsistent in color. That is true of this piece, the neck of which is darker than the body. Faint traces of gilding remain on the neck, indicating that originally the change in color was disguised by an overlay of gilded ornament.
