Art Historical Context

Henri Sallembier, a French artist active from the late eighteenth into the early nineteenth century, created this 1805 print titled *Vases*. Working during the Napoleonic era, Sallembier contributed to the decorative arts tradition that celebrated classical forms and elegant ornament. His prints often served as models for craftsmen and designers, helping spread refined motifs across Europe and beyond. As a print medium, this work highlights an important means of artistic dissemination in the period. Unlike unique paintings or drawings, prints could be produced in multiples, making intricate designs for vases and other decorative objects accessible to a wider audience of artisans, collectors, and enthusiasts. The crisp lines and balanced composition typical of such works reflect both technical skill and the era’s taste for symmetry and antiquity. Now part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection, *Vases* was acquired through the Advisory Council. Its presence underscores the museum’s commitment to preserving international design history and the enduring appeal of classical-inspired ornament in American institutions.
