Art Historical Context

**Vluchtende Hugenoten op een Boot (Fleeing Huguen on a Boat)** *Adolphe Mouilleron, 1859–1887, tonal lithograph on paper, 519 × 685 mm* This evocative lithograph by French artist Adolphe Mouon captures a dramatic moment of exile: Protestant Huguenots fleeing persecution aboard a precarious boat. Created in the mid-to-late 19th, it reflects the Romantic fascination with historical tragedy and human resilience. Mouilleron, a skilled lithographer, often depicted such scenes with emotional intensity, drawing from France's turbulent religious past to evoke sympathy for the refugees. The subject draws from the Huguenot exodus following the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, when thousands of French Protestants escaped to Protestant lands like the Netherlands—hinted at by the Dutch title. This print immortalizes their perilous sea journeys, blending pathos with a sense of defiance amid stormy waves and crowded decks. Mouilleron's mastery shines in his tonal lithography technique: black inks layered with a beige tone block and subtle scraping (schaaftechniek) create rich gradations of light and shadow on paper. This innovative 19th-century method allowed affordable, detailed reproductions, making grand historical narratives accessible to a wide audience and underscoring lithography's role in popularizing cultural memory.
