**Wall with Chimneyp and Mirror** *François de Cuvés the Elder (Belgian, active in Germany 1695–1768), 18th century* Bound print; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Purchased for the Museum by Advisory Council François de Cuvilli the Elder, a masterful architect and designer of Belgian origin who thrived in the German courts, exemplifies the exuberant Rococo style of the 18th century. in 1695, he rose to prominence in Bavaria, creating lavish interiors for palaces like the Amalienburg at Nymphenburg. This bound print depicts an elegant wall design featuring a chimneypiece—a ornate fireplace mantel—and a grand mirror, hallmarks of Rococo's playful asymmetry, scrolling motifs, and gilded opulence.
