About this artwork
Zar Nikolaus II. als Chef eines Regimentes mit dem Namen seines Vaters.
Art Historical Context
The plaster bust depicts Tsar Nicholas II from the chest up, his head turned slightly to the viewer’s left. He wears a formal military uniform with epaulettes, braided cords, and medals, while a heavy cloak is swept across his torso in broad, textured folds. The base is ornamented with a small heraldic shield, and the entire work is rendered in a smooth, pale material that captures crisp details of fabric, buttons, and facial features. Created by Stefan Schwartz after 1894, the sculpture shows the Russian emperor as chief of a regiment named for his father. Now part of the Belvedere Collection in Vienna, the bust reflects the late-nineteenth-century taste for official portraiture that combined realistic likeness with the dignity of state and military office. Its modest scale and crisp modeling make it an approachable example of how European courts used sculpture to convey authority and continuity.
