Biography
French painter and designer whose influence dominated 17th-century French painting. He worked for King Louis XIV who appointed him 'Premier Peinture de Roi' and director of Goeblins. He oversaw the design of the royal palace of Versailles, including the architecture, decoration and landscape. In later life, he produced primarily smaller-scale religious paintings.
