Art Historical Context
Jörg Lederer’s “Darbringung Jesu im Tempel” (Presentation of Jesus in the Temple), created around 1510–152, captures a pivotal biblical moment when Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus at the, as described in the Gospel of Luke. This carved limewood relief, measuring 111 by 103 centimeters, originally formed part of a larger altarpiece, reflecting the devotional needs of early-sixteenth-century worshippers in the Alpine regions of southern Germany and Austria. Lederer worked in the late Gothic tradition, favoring expressive figures and rich surface detail. The sculpture retains its original polychromy and gilding, with select areas once highlighted in silver, demonstrating the period’s sophisticated techniques for enhancing light and narrative focus within dimly lit church interiors. Such painted and gilded wood reliefs were prized for their ability to combine sculptural depth with painterly color, making sacred stories vivid and accessible to congregations. Today housed in the Belvedere Collection in Vienna, the work offers visitors a tangible link to the artistic and spiritual culture of the pre-Reformation era, when carved altarpieces served as both teaching tools and objects of communal devotion.
