Jean Berain the Elder (1640–1711), a masterful French ornamental designer and engraver, created this *Panel Design of Grotes Ornamentation* in1711, the very year of his death. the royal designer for King Louis XIV, Berain was renowned for his intricate "berainesque", blending fluid arabesques, mythical creatures, and fantastical in a whimsical yet elegant manner.
