About this artwork

This monumental hanging scroll by Jin Chushi represents one of five surviving panels from a complete set of ten illustrating the Buddhist "Ten Kings of Hell," created before 1195 during China's Song dynasty (960-1279). The theme, which developed during the Tang dynasty's second half (618-907), transforms Indian Buddhist concepts of post-mortem judgment into a distinctly Chinese bureaucratic process.
