Inscribed on the back of this painting are the words âFrom Berthaâs Window.â Bertha Hill was Carroll Beckwithâs wife, whom he married in 1887. (Franchi and Weber, Intimate Revelations: The Art of Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917), 1999) The couple moved to Rome in 1910 and also made a trip to Florence, where Beckwith painted this scene on the eleventh of October.
