1782–1843
Charles Abraham Chasselat (1782–1843) was a French historical painter, draughtsman, and lithographer who became particularly renowned for his book illustrations and documentation of state ceremonials. Born in Paris in 1782, Chasselat was the son of Pierre Chasselat (1753–1814), a miniaturist, which provided him early exposure to artistic practice and the demands of commissioned work. He received formal training from his father and from François-André Vincent, a prominent history painter, establishing a solid foundation in academic technique. Chasselat exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, with his 1812 entry "The Repose of Belisarius" demonstrating his competence in historical subjects drawn from classical antiquity. However, his greatest success came through book illustration, where he created vignettes and illustrations for works by Voltaire, Racine, Molière, and other French literary masters. Notably, he illustrated the first French translations of Jane Austen's novels in the 1820s, introducing French readers to the English author's works through his visual interpretations. Beyond literary illustration, Chasselat received official commissions to document important state occasions, creating drawings of ceremonial events including the "Funeral of Louis XVIII" and the "Coronation of Charles X." These works served both artistic and documentary purposes, preserving visual records of Bourbon Restoration pageantry. His son, Henri Jean Saint-Ange Chasselat (1813–1880), continued the family artistic tradition, studying under Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (known as Lethière) and painting historical and genre subjects. Charles Abraham Chasselat died in Paris in 1843. His works are preserved in major collections including The Morgan Library & Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the British Museum.
