Biography
Born in the Dominican Republic. Painter of decorative schemes, portraits, nudes, and North African scenes. Perhaps most famous for the decoration of the Cour des Comptes in the Palais d'Orsay; he combined Ingres' classical linear grace with Delacroix's Romantic color. Comment on works: history
