Art Historical Context

Gustav Klimt’s “Dame in Weiß” (Lady in White), painted in 1917–1918, is one of the unfinished canvases discovered in the artist’s studio after his death. This oil on canvas, now in the Belvedere Collection in Vienna, captures the final phase of Klimt’s career. The square 70 × 70 cm format and the unknown model’s diagonal placement create a striking three-part composition: the figure at the center, a luminous background on the left, and a dark plane on the right. The visible, energetic brushstrokes reveal Klimt’s working process, while the emphasis on flattened planes and decorative arrangement reflects the ideals of Viennese Jugendstil. Although incomplete, the painting demonstrates how Klimt continued to explore elegant poses and balanced color contrasts until the very end of his life.
