Der verhärmt und verbittert wirkende Faust blickt gerade von seinem Lesepult auf zu Mephisto in Menschengestalt. Der Protagonist, dessen Kleidung dem Stil des 16. Jahrhunderts entspricht, wurde gerade bei der Lektüre des Johannes-Evangeliums unterbrochen.
