Wang Yuanqi (1642–1715), one of the leading Orthodox masters of the early Qing dynasty, created this handscroll in 9. As a court painter and descendant of the Ming-dynasty artist Wang Shimin, he dedicated his career to reviving and refining the brushwork traditions of the Yuan masters. Painted in ink and light color on paper, the long, narrow format of the handscroll invites viewers to experience the landscape gradually, unrolling it section by section as one might travel along a river.
