George Catlin described the location of the attack as âa ravine, near the Mandan village.â Catlin may have observed an Indian skirmish during his visit to the Mandan village in 1832, but the painting is most likely a studio fabrication. (Truettner, The Natural Man Observed, 1979)

George Catlin (1796–1872), born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Putnam Catlin and Polly Sutton—who had been captured by Native Americans during the 1778 Battle of Wyoming—initially pursued a legal career.
