About Salvator Rosa

1615–1673

Noted for original artisitic style and subjects, and his extravagant personality. Studied first with Francesco Francanzano, his brother-in-law, later with Ribera and probably with Aniello Falcone. Although he painted figures and other subjects as well, he is best known today for dark, romanticized landscapes and history paintings that had substantial influence from 17th to 19th centuries.
