George Catlin prized the authenticity of his depictions of Native Americans, and cited the âhistorical factâ that the Sioux warrior âkilled and scalped on his horseâs back.â Catlin painted this work in Paris between 1846 and 1848, when he was creating dramatic, more highly finished paintings for a European clientele hungry for the romance of the American West. George Catlin (1796–1872), born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Putnam Catlin and Polly Sutton—who had been captured by Native Americans during the 1778 Battle of Wyoming—initially pursued a legal career.
